SANDSHACK - FOODPARC, UOB PLAZA
Lately I have been keen in exploring new F&B establishments which are small in scale, yet truly excelling in great ways. Introducing you one of the new contingents in the industry: Sandshack! Established back in 2018, they specialize in serving Japanese-style sandwiches (which I have not really found to be served by others in town). They started running their business from a Pre-Order (PO) System back in Kelapa Gading where they used to make up to hundreds of sandwiches a day to orders from various customers. Due to great feedback and increasing demand, they decided to open their first outlet in Foodparc, UOB Plaza! Foodparc is the only food court in the office building and you can access it through the side entrance of Chubb Square. Do note that due to the small space of the food court and a huge number of employees in the building, they are super packed during lunch breaks and peak hours. Yet do not worry because you can still opt for various ways to get your sandwich here!
Before getting into the things that they serve on the menu, I would like to appreciate the people behind Sandshack and their fine minds. When I first took a slight glance to their menu, I know they have been going in the right direction because their menu is very simplified; having their specialties to be highlighted evenly without attempting to serve too much yet losing focus from their sole concept. Another interesting fact that amused me is that their chef has an impressive background in the culinary industry: with compelling education background and her work experience in one of the best fine dining restaurants in Jakarta. If you take a closer look at their menu, you will see the information about the ingredients which are being used for each dish and they really stick to their concept of serving Japanese-oriented dishes by using ingredients that also resembles the character of Japanese cuisine, for example: horenzo, nori, ube and more! Not to mention, good quality of ingredients for such reasonable price: take the use of Red Cheddar as an example.
They basically divide their menu into three highlighted sections:
- Sandwiches: Their signature range; served both a la carte or accompanied with selections of French Fries/Silky Pudding/Ube Chips.
- Wraps: Same ingredients with their sandwiches, but served in simple wraps.
- Onigiri: Also with the same ingredients, yet packed with onigiri style.
- Rice Bowl: This one is called the "Sō" range, inspired by their brand mascot.
- Sweets: Not only serving savory ones, they also have options for sweet toppings.
I really enjoyed learning about their background and the well-thought concept which are both down to the details. Not only that they got inspired to serve Japanese sandwiches as their specialty, they really take Japanese as their theme seriously. I have to say that lots of establishments in the market really like to claim that they serve "authentic" Japanese cuisine, even taking Japanese cuisine as an easy type. Although Japanese cuisine might be simple in a glance, the ingredients really play a vital part in the cuisine. With Sandshack, I really appreciate how they carefully curate and select the elements and components for each dish. With a curated range of selections, it ensures the customers to always get what they really specialize in - which I think is wise!
I got to try some entries that has become their best-selling ones and here are my verdict towards each of them (which I loved overall):
Beef Bang (Ala Carte: 45K / with Fries: 55K)
This one is the newest entry to their menu and I got to taste it before it got launched earlier this month! I really love their beef bulgogi which was cooked nicely with great crisp while being tender. Their beef is something special (which I will explain in their other range if you just scroll to the bottom of this article). Though this one is new, I highly recommend those who are going to try Sandshack for the first time to opt for this!
Mushroom (Ala Carte: 45K / with Fries: 55K)
Now this one might seem really simple, yet I have to tell you that mushroom is an ingredient which is not that easy as it seems to be executed nicely. I really love how they preserved the earthy nature of the mushrooms and even gave more emphasis using the caramelized onions! Paired with Horenzo, this one might not have meat inside yet this was just as great as the ones with meat. A staple one!
Chicken Blackpepper (Ala Carte: 45K / with Fries: 55K)
Using boneless chicken thigh instead of breast, they cooked the chicken to be really tender as if it was sous-vide (not joking - impressive for a small-scale business like this)! I told you that they shall not be understated for having a chef with excellent culinary background. The lettuce gave a fresh touch of crunchiness to pair the tenderness of the chicken and the red cheddar was generous!
Sō Gyudon (39K)
They might specialize in their sandwiches, yet this one was a showstopper. It was really good that it instantly beat the top ones in the same market segmentation in my opinion. The bulgogi beef (which is also used for their Beef Bang sandwich) was cooked beautifully without being dry and marinated finely. Fragrant with sautéed onions that just even added more complementary touch of texture and some nori on top! This was supposedly served with egg in the middle, yet I asked for none since I am cutting off some egg from my diet. I know that is quite sad because this with runny egg in the middle would just be even more terrific!

BAM! I obviously could not finish all of those at the same time - tried reheating them in the oven and the flavors were all still nicely put together and even some became better with extra smokiness! I just have this love and respect for this brand and I really want all of you to love them as well! With all that they have and serve, they have a huge potential of turning this up into a gourmet level. Summed up together, they are simply the kind that you would trust if you fancy great delicacy in simple options for your tight commute. Totally agree with that they state: "Delightful layers and bursting flavor"!
Wishing all the very best for Sandshack!
